Omtrips Weekly, Edition 6: South Korea writes wellness tourism into law

Governments are starting to treat wellness travel as infrastructure rather than atmosphere. South Korea wrote it into law, a Czech spa town costed out a comeback, and Indonesia is betting on Batam. Meanwhile the bathhouse boom has reached the multi-site stage, and American psychedelic policy spent the week arguing with itself.

The Big Story

South Korea just made wellness tourism the law

Spa Business22 Sep 2026

South Korea's Act on the Promotion of the Healing Tourism Industry took effect on April 9, 2026, giving wellness travel its own legal framework: business registration systems, minimum standards for programs, staffing and accessibility, specialist training, and designated regional healing tourism districts. Twenty destinations will receive up to KRW 50 million each, around US$36,600, for international marketing and product development. Dongseo University's Danny Kessler put it plainly: Korea's wellness strategy is no longer sectoral, but systemic.

Coaching continues for up to 12 months after guests leave.

The medi-wellness village in Nakhon Pathom, near Bangkok, has opened a one-night Wellness Getaway from THB 18,500, about US$574, per person twin share, against THB 53,000 for its standard three-night program. It includes full board, group classes, hydrotherapy at Bor Naam, a personalized assessment, a medical consultation and treatment credits. EVP of wellness Piyarat Tanjaputkul frames it as an accessible introduction rather than a replacement for a longer journey. It runs through October 2027.

The pitch is length of stay: a reason to linger for several days rather than pass through.

Marijuana Moment25 Sep 2026

Internal analysis showed the program facing a US$3.8 million shortfall even without the increase, and up to US$4.2 million with it if businesses closed. Satya Therapeutics co-founder Andreas Met called it an industry fighting for its survival.

Psychedelics lobbying hits a near record as the capital keeps arriving

Psychedelic Alpha25 Sep 2026

Federal lobbying by psychedelics companies reached just under US$350,000 in the second quarter of 2026, driven largely by Compass Pathways and Definium Therapeutics. The same bulletin logs BetterLife raising US$100 million for a non-hallucinogenic headache candidate, and Stanford and UCSF researchers pressing for more aggressive blinding protocols in psychedelic trials.
