Omtrips Weekly, Edition 8: The aftercare gap, Tasmania's wellness precinct, and Canyon Ranch's Hill Country debut

Seventeen stories this week, and a theme that keeps surfacing: what happens after the retreat ends. The first Global Retreat Report puts a number on it, a small California sanctuary quietly builds integration check-ins into its new program, and a Los Angeles trial asks whether eight weeks of meditation changes what psilocybin does. Elsewhere, Tasmania goes looking for a wellness precinct developer, Banyan buys into 26 African lodges and reserves, and six new stays open from Kuala Lumpur to Taipei.

The Big Story

Guests rate post-retreat support 4.1 out of 10, and hosts know it

Spa BusinessOct 2026

The first Global Retreat Report 2026, commissioned by Synergy and led by researcher Dr Ivana Damnjanovic, surveyed 252 industry professionals and 203 consumers across 25 countries. Attendees scored post-retreat support just 4.12 out of 10, with 61% giving four or below and first-time guests averaging 3.3, even though their average intention to return sat at 7.34. Professionals named integration, the work of helping guests carry the experience into daily life, as the thing their businesses most often neglect, while 84% still rated their optimism about the sector at eight or higher.

Datu Wellness takes over a 14-room Umbrian hermitage for a week of silence

Spa Business7 Oct 2026

Nomadic operator Datu Wellness staged A Withdrawal into the Art of Introspection at Eremito Hotelito del Alma, a stone hermitage set in more than 3,000 hectares of protected reserve in Umbria. The 9 to 15 October program drew on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, pairing meditation with walking, gentle postures, breathing practice and daily Ayurvedic treatments across 14 monastic rooms with no devices and no artificial light after dark. Six nights full board started at £2,500 per person sharing, with founder Constantin Bjerke framing the concept as ancient wisdom for modern problems.

A California nonprofit retreat rebuilds around breathwork, teacher residencies and follow-up

PR Newswire12 Oct 2026

Vedanta Spiritual and Holistic Retreat now trades as Still Mountain Wellness Retreat, keeping its 501(c)(3) structure while widening its program across 240 preserved acres at California Hot Springs in the southern Sierra Nevada, with natural thermal mineral water and dark night skies. A signature breathwork course sits alongside silent stays, women's restorative gatherings, full and new moon meditations and corporate renewal retreats, all small group and residential. Two details worth a host's attention: guest teacher residencies with campus hosting, and post-retreat integration check-ins, which is precisely the gap this week's Big Story measures.

USC puts psilocybin and eight weeks of meditation head to head for depression

Keck School of Medicine of USC7 Oct 2026

The EVIDENT-MAP trial will enroll 80 Los Angeles adults with depression, none with prior psychedelic or meditation experience, split between psilocybin therapy alone and psilocybin therapy layered onto an eight-week mindfulness program with daily home practice. Participants receive two dosing sessions about a month apart, six hours of preparatory psychotherapy and six integration sessions, with EEG and MRI data, biological samples, wearables and a purpose-built lyric-free playlist timed to the drug's effects. ARPA-H is funding it with up to US$4 million under its EVIDENT initiative, led by Dr Rael Cahn of the USC Center for Mindfulness Science.

Compass talks pricing and a deliberately slow launch as candidate brand names surface

Psychedelic Alpha8 Oct 2026

Psychedelic Alpha's latest bulletin reports Compass Pathways discussing pricing, labeling and a slow commercial launch for its treatment-resistant depression program, and flags six more potential brand names filed by Compass and Definium for LSD and psilocybin candidates. It also tracks New Mexico moving closer to opening its medical psilocybin program, where a proposed landlord rule has drawn pushback. For anyone hosting plant medicine adjacent work, the signal is that the first legal approvals are likely to arrive with narrow labels and cautious rollouts rather than open access.

Cannabis Caucus co-chair wants psilocybin folded into a wider federal drug review

Marijuana Moment9 Oct 2026

Rep. Brian Mast, co-chair of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, said the administration's marijuana rescheduling should widen into an across-the-board look at federal drug classifications, naming cannabis, hemp, psilocybin and tranquilizers, and calling it a bigger conversation about what works and what does not. The push lands while a broader rescheduling hearing sits paused over a Government Accountability Office report. That report found the DEA has no written procedures for how staff evaluate or schedule substances, and that the FDA lacks similar procedures for its own evaluations.

Longevity tourism takes the main stage at WTTC in Malta

RUS Tourism News8 Oct 2026

A longevity and wellness session at the WTTC Global Summit in Valletta, running 7 to 9 October, pushed the conversation past treatment menus toward the habits that hold over time: sleep, movement, nutrition and stress. Tim Gray of Health Optimisation and Raffaella di Sipio of Terme & SPA Italia, with National Geographic Traveller's Pat Riddell moderating, drew a clear line between hotel-led lifestyle programs and medical tourism, noting that lifespan and disease-prevention claims need real evidence and qualified clinicians. Sleep quality came up as the clearest near-term opportunity, from room temperature and sound insulation to recovery routines for jet-lagged guests.
