Omtrips Weekly, Edition 10: The VA picks its first ten psychedelic sites, Europe's quiet head start, and Kengo Kuma builds into a private fjord

Seventeen stories this week, and plant medicine leads it. Our Big Story comes out of a New York forum where federal officials finally put numbers to something that has been abstract for years: ten sites selected, a phased plan on the Secretary's desk, and 2.1 million veterans who might qualify. Europe, meanwhile, is quietly solving access its own way, with Norway funding generic ketamine at roughly an eighth of the branded price. Also this week: Kengo Kuma building into a private fjord near Capri, an award winning lake resort in the Georgian wine country, cruise lines routing to Philippine islands most travelers cannot name, a cold plunge trial that came back flat, a new Fouquet's in the Swiss Alps with more spa than bedrooms, a wood-fired bathhouse that moves along London's canals, and New Mexico pulling its medical psilocybin launch forward a year.

The Big Story

The VA names its first ten sites for psychedelic therapy and warns demand will outrun supply

Psychedelic Alpha22 Oct 2026

Federal officials laid out the clearest timeline yet at the Psychedelic Healthcare Forum in New York, with panelists from the FDA, ARPA-H and the Department of Veterans Affairs. The VA has selected ten initial sites, most with prior psychedelic trial experience, and handed a phased implementation plan to Secretary Doug Collins. Of the 6.4 million veterans in regular VA care, around 2.1 million carry PTSD, major depressive disorder or treatment resistant depression, and senior advisor Andrew Gradison said treating even four digits worth of patients in the first year would be a challenge: demand will exceed supply from the opening day.

Europe is quietly building access while it waits for approval

Psychedelic Alpha23 Oct 2026

More than 270 people gathered in Tallinn for Estonia's first international conference on psychedelic assisted therapy, and the country reports were striking. Norway now publicly funds generic ketamine for treatment resistant depression at about EUR 3,852 for a six month course against roughly EUR 29,984 for branded esketamine, while Switzerland's case by case framework saw about 100 physicians treat 775 patients across 15 sites in 2025. One figure explains the urgency: of 63 psychiatric treatments approved over the past 15 years, 62 reached patients in the United States and only 23 reached patients in Europe.

Psilocybin lowered inflammation markers in people with Parkinson's

Marijuana Moment26 Oct 2026

Researchers at UC San Francisco and Columbia gave a small group of people with Parkinson's disease and mood dysfunction 10mg of psilocybin, then 25mg about two weeks later, and found inflammation and mitochondrial stress markers significantly reduced in blood samples, with the effect still visible a month after the final dose. Published in JAMA Psychiatry, it is an early signal that the benefit may reach past mood into the disease process itself. Hold it lightly: the study was open label with no control group, the cohort was small, and participants knew what they were taking.

New Mexico pulls its medical psilocybin launch forward a year, and the rules draw fire

Marijuana Moment14 Oct 2026

The state health department has accelerated its medical psilocybin program to December 2026, a year ahead of the statutory deadline, covering treatment resistant depression, PTSD, substance use disorder and end of life distress. The draft rules drew objections at an October hearing from clinicians, advocates and Senator Jeff Steinborn, who sponsored the Act: a certifying clinician role requiring an in person exam, a state patient database, and written landlord consent for in home sessions, which Disability Rights New Mexico argues conflicts with fair housing law. Regulators are still reviewing the record, and the state's first producer permit has already gone out.

New Stays

Kengo Kuma is building a 63-room hotel into a private fjord near Capri

Sleeper21 Oct 2026

The Romeo Collection's third property goes up at Punta San Lorenzo in a secluded nature reserve, the closest point on the coast to Capri, reimagining the 1963 Hotel Delfino with environmental restoration as the organizing idea. Kuma is working from the Japanese concept of Ma, treating emptiness as a presence, in tuff, travertine, American walnut and matte ceramics, with an infinity pool designed to read as continuous with the Gulf. Sixty-three rooms and suites, opening May 2027.

Spa Business26 Oct 2026

The First Cortina opens in early December in the Dolomites, a 76-key conversion of the former Hotel Splendid Venezia, owned and operated by The Pavilions Hotels and Resorts. Revivo Spa spreads 1,200sq m over two levels with six treatment rooms, an indoor pool whose glass doors slide open to the mountain air, a sauna, a traditional hammam and a Zerobody dry float bed. Zuma handles the Japanese side of the dining, Velo the Italian.

Georgia's top resort for 2026 sits on a lake in the Kakheti wine country

Rus Tourism News20 Oct 2026

Lopota Lake Resort and Spa took Georgia's Leading Resort 2026 at the World Travel Awards, spread across about 60 hectares of forest, vineyard and lake in the foothills of the Caucasus. It opened in 2008 as a small family run guesthouse and now carries 310 rooms across 16 buildings, with a Forest Spa that added Valmont in January and runs vinotherapy, a Georgian forest ritual and hydrotherapy. There is a working winery on site, Chateau Buera, in the region that gave the world qvevri winemaking.

Four private Greek island villas join Mandarin Oriental's homes collection

Rus Tourism News27 Oct 2026

All four are privately owned and sit across the Ionian islands and the Cyclades: Villa Alice on Corfu's northeastern coast from EUR 17,059 a week, VAYRA on a Corfu hillside with two infinity pools and wellness spaces across an 8,000sq m estate, SERENAOS on Lefkada with a private bay, a floating pontoon and an olive grove, and Casa Gaia above Fokos Beach on Mykonos at EUR 69,062. Three of the four sit well away from the usual island crowds, which is rather the point. Worth watching if you list holiday homes: branded collections are moving into territory that used to belong to independent villa owners.

Fouquet's opens 11 suites in Gstaad with an 800sq m spa behind them

Rus Tourism News24 Oct 2026

The sixth Fouquet's opens in the Swiss Alps on 4 December with just 11 suites and six apartments, running from 46 to 250sq m, plus a private chalet of around 1,500sq m. The spa covers more than 800sq m with a 15m indoor pool, sauna, hammam, indoor and outdoor jacuzzis, a snow shower, five treatment rooms using Augustinus Bader, two Reformers and a yoga studio. Barriere Collection took it over from Ultima Group, and the ratio of spa to keys is the thing worth noticing: this is a wellness property that happens to have bedrooms.

Biohacking & Longevity

Cold plunge did no better than heat or plain rest for getting strength back

News Medical21 Oct 2026

Forty healthy, active adults were put through muscle damaging exercise and randomly assigned to hot water immersion at 42C, cold water at 9C, hot air at 30C or passive recovery at room temperature. Strength fell about 36% across every group and returned over 72 hours with no statistically significant difference between the four approaches. Heat did raise the repair linked protein HSP72 and cleared the muscle damage marker CK-MM faster, published in the Journal of Thermal Biology, which is a useful nuance for any operator selling contrast therapy as a recovery guarantee.

A wood-fired bathhouse that moves along London's canals

Dwell8 Oct 2026

Architecture studio Badweather spent about 18 months turning a near derelict steel hulled canal boat into a 500sq ft floating bathhouse, with a sauna lined in thermally treated aspen and alder, two cold plunge pools, showers and a small bar, built with around 40 collaborators. It runs off grid: canal water filtered and UV treated, reverse osmosis for drinking water, solar panels, a wood stove and a battery stack. Twelve people at a time, GBP 32 a visit, and it moors somewhere new roughly every two weeks, which is about as far from a destination spa as wellness gets.

A 1,200-acre longevity estate opens its first building outside Atlanta

Spa Business20 Oct 2026

Preserve Life has opened Nutrition Nest, a 25,000sq ft day clinic in Douglasville, Georgia, built in mass timber by BNIM beside a 50,000sq ft organic growing house. Five departments cover diagnostics and therapies including red and infrared light, sauna and hyperbaric oxygen, plus aesthetics, a functional market, culinary medicine and an events space, with membership free at entry and climbing to US$999 a month at the top tier. Phase one is a US$300m investment due to be fully operational by the end of 2027, with a Kengo Kuma designed core, sleep suites and a bathing pavilion still to come.

A free online conference pulls retreat leaders together for the first time

EIN Presswire23 Oct 2026

The International Retreat Association ran Come Grow With Us, a free five hour virtual conference built entirely for retreat hosts, with 13 speakers on venue and partner selection, pricing, enrollment, sponsorship, community building and repeatable revenue. Founder Holly Porter also previewed Wisdome, a new member platform, and every session went into the association's education library. A second virtual edition is set for January 2027 and a first in person gathering for April. Worth noting that this is an association promoting its own membership, so weigh the pitch accordingly.

Anantara plans a 70-key retreat inside a working Darjeeling tea estate

TTG Asia22 Oct 2026

Minor Hotels will open Anantara Retreat Darjeeling Hills on part of the 849 hectare Tindharia Tea Estate in West Bengal, about an hour from Bagdogra airport and 40km from Darjeeling town. The plan runs to 35 suites and 35 tented villas with an Anantara Spa, fitness center and pool, and programs across yoga, nutrition and mindfulness alongside tours of the working gardens and factory. The opening is set for 2031, so read it as a signal about where a major operator sees retreat demand heading rather than a trip you can book.

Luxury cruise lines are routing to Philippine islands most travelers cannot name

TTG Asia27 Oct 2026

Ponant, Silversea and Scenic are all adding Philippine sailings with longer stays and calls far off the standard map: Kalanggaman, Limasawa, Higatangan, Sibuyan, Batanes, Claveria and the Hundred Islands among them. Ponant runs a nine day cruise out of Manila in February 2028, and Silversea has an expedition sailing with nine Philippine days in June 2027. Shan Dioquino David of CITTI Elite, which sells all three lines locally, says almost every booking is international rather than domestic, which tells you where the appetite for these islands is actually coming from.

Minor's longevity brand buys a seat at the Global Wellness Summit as Phuket demand triples

Rus Tourism News22 Oct 2026

Life Longevity, launched by Minor Hotels this month, has become a strategic partner of the 2026 Global Wellness Summit, which marks its twentieth edition in Phuket from 10 to 13 November. Its flagship, the Layan Life Longevity Retreat at Anantara Layan Phuket, reports wellness related guest nights more than tripling year on year in the first half of 2026. A Bangkok longevity hub is planned for the 15th floor of The St. Regis with no date confirmed, and the brand is chasing three formats at once: destination retreats, urban hubs and wellness residences.

The end of mainland South America becomes a national park with no roads into it

National Geographic20 Oct 2026

Cape Froward, the southernmost point of mainland South America, lands on National Geographic's Best of the World list for 2027, the year it formally becomes Chile's newest national park and the 19th stop on Patagonia's 1,700 mile Route of Parks. There are no roads in: you drive Route 9 south out of Punta Arenas until the road ends, then continue on foot or by boat, past shell middens left by the Kawesqar, who have paddled this coast for roughly 7,000 years. Chile Nativo runs a five day trek and a four day kayak route from October to March, humpbacks pass through from December, and summer winds top 60mph, which is both the appeal and the planning problem.
